Hey Linda. Yes, the press release backlinks might come in handy after the Tumblr crackdown. If you're going to use a blog platform, I'd say Hubpages or Wordpress. (Blogger has nofollow links, and I'm sure you know about the recent Squidoo slap.)

So far, the one Tumblr blog that I created is still standing. This Tumblr blog is unconnected to my 30DC niche, though. I added photos to the Tumblr blog and linked to my own domain (no aff links). Perhaps making your blog look "pretty" (photos, modified template, no naked aff. links) helps prevent deactivation. There is another 30DC guy who added videos to his Tumblr blogs and his blogs are still active, too.

I am running behind schedule in terms of getting my 30DC Tumblr blogs online. (Still writing content.) However, it looks like my "lateness" may have paid off - since it helped me avoid the "Tumblr Slap."

We might need that list for another reason now - after what's happened to Tumblr today. I'm thinking of using Blogger but will it be as gorgeous a friend?

"Reciprocal link exchanges are frowned upon. "

in general yes, but I'm guessing if the sites were "related" if it would work.

for intance, put out a call for diet/fitness reciprocals in the forums.

just a thought.

Hey Mark. Reciprocal link exchanges are frowned upon. But you could do a 3-way link exchange. Jonathan Leger started something like this (3waylinks.net) a couple of months ago. He had a free beta program that I tried on one of my sites. I noticed good results initially (got on the first page of Google for one of my targeted keywords), but now there's nothing. Stayed on 1st page of Google for 4 days, but then the site disappeared from the SERPS for that keyword. Now I can't even find the site in the top 15 pages on Google for that same keyword. This was my first time participating in a link exchange program, so I don't really know what to think. The SEO boost was very short-lived.
